The Lugger Hotel

Once the haunt of seafaring ne’er-do-wells, the centuries-old Lugger Hotel is now a fantastic hip hideaway tucked in amongst the cliffs of the south Cornwall coastline. The perfect place to unwind in style.

Depending on where you’re based in the UK, it can take a fair old while to get down to the Cornwall coast – as long as five hours on the train from London, for instance. If anything’s going to make the journey worthwhile, though, it’s the prospect of staying in The Lugger Hotel, a former smugglers’ bolthole overlooking Portloe’s picturesque harbour.

Owners Richard and Sheryl Young fell in love with the property five years ago after popping in for a crab sandwich, and, since buying it, they’ve transformed the once shabby seventeenth-century inn into a much more comfortable and elegant affair. All twenty-one en suite rooms are decked out in plush, pristine white furnishings, offset with the odd off-white accessory, and the décor is cool, clean and understated throughout, making the best of the original architectural features, such as ceiling beams and wooden floors.

Communal areas are equally stylish - the lounge is dotted with huge squashy sofas to sink into, and the restaurant retains the plain, monochrome colour scheme. It also has a menu to match the sophistication of its surroundings, with seafood dishes, unsurprisingly, a speciality - locally caught crab and lobster is delivered daily.

While The Lugger is ideal for a restful week or weekend away, those who fancy something a little more active can take advantage of the watersports available, trek through the nearby national park, or saddle up and enjoy expert instruction at the nearby riding school.
