Traditional beachfront fishermen's huts in Whitstable, a town renowned for its oysters and the ideal place for a nostalgic seaside weekend.
The people of Kent are rightly proud of their 'pearl', the fishing town of Whitstable located on the Thames Estuary. Its winding alleyways have been the haunt of smugglers for centuries; nowadays they contain a real treasure trove of boutiques just waiting to be discovered. A mere 60 miles from London and 6 from the city of Canterbury, this is a seafood-lover's paradise, famed for its oysters and charming atmosphere.
Owned by the Whitstable Oyster Fishery Company, the Fisherman's Huts are part of the Hotel Contintental and nestled where its garden meets the beach. The row of six converted cockle sheds and a former boat-building shed, "The Anderson", are decorated simply and all have stunning sea views; they are also just a few hundred yards from the Oyster Fishery restaurant. Two of the weatherboard huts sleep two adults; the remaining four and the Anderson Shed, which has a kitchen, lounge area and bay windows complete with window seats looking out to sea, are family huts, each with two bedrooms. The Oyster Fishery Co also has its own brewery and all of the huts have fridges stocked with their beer.
To burn off the town's delicious local fare, take a walk along the beach or try your hand at kite-surfing, wind-surfing or sailing, but be careful not to get distracted: the eye-catching restaurant and beach were used during the BBC's filming of Sarah Water's novel Tipping the Velvet and are often frequented by models on location.
