Driftwood Hotel

Have you stayed here? Write a review.

Sand, sea and scallops: most people's idea of a perfect getaway. A Cornish haven of peace that is blissful not brash.

To stay at the Driftwood Hotel is to completely unwind. The private beach, microclimate and seven acres of space provide the entertainment, and time really does float by. The atmosphere is helped in no small way by the family Robinson, who gutted the seaside guesthouse in February 2002 to reopen it the following May as the renewed, rejigged and utterly relaxing Driftwood.

You can tell as soon as you arrive that the lady of the house is an interior designer. It's the uncluttered aura of chill that does it. Sea and sand colours, fluffy towels and heaps of the eponymous driftwood are laid on in the individually designed guestrooms. Most boutique hotels choose to replicate the average London lounge, complete with DVD player: thankfully, these guys are a hundred times subtler. The complimentary afternoon tea and children's beds, together with a free gastro meal in the low season, just add to the appeal.

And the food really is lovely. It will set you back £34 for three courses for much of the year and is modern, hearty and, better still, almost totally organic. This is the sort of place where the chef could tell you who hauled in the monkfish you're about to eat. Smokers must nip outside for an after dinner puff, however.

Those bombing down for the weekend should head southwest on the A3078 from Tregony. The Driftwood is signposted left about six miles on. Those not beachcombing can take in the famed Lost Gardens of Heligan down the road.

Room rates : £150-£190: All but Room 9 have a sea view. Room 3 has a shower only. Prices vary little throughout the year, although there is a slight discount for those staying more than two nights. Breakfast is included, as is morning and afternoon tea.

Rooms to ask for: Pick of the bunch and most popular is the secluded cabin, a 100m trot across the sand from the hotel proper. Room 8 has the luxury of a private sunroom. Rooms 5 and 10 are the largest.

Number of rooms: Ten rooms and one cabin.
