The Other Side of the Canary Islands

Lee McMurray

For most people, the Canary Islands are synonymous with lacklustre packages in resorts that offer little more than a break in Blackpool, except warmer climes and a bit of sunshine. But on the larger islands of Lanzarote and Tenerife you can uncover plenty of hidden treasures, if only you know where to look.

'Lanza-grotty' actually has a thriving artistic community, is the site of several impressive sculptures and monuments and has a host of gourmet eateries serving more than the standard pizza and chips. And Tenerife is just as cultural as its neighbour, with galleries and museums, alongside the recently opened and architecturally stunning opera house.
