going spare

Give your box room a new lease of life.

Is your spare room all a-clutter with dusty boxes you’ve been meaning to sort through for eons? Make it your mission to do away with the junk and put your newfound space to good use…

The home cinema
Love film? Then why not bring the big screen to your spare room? Paint the walls a deep maroon, hang a blackout blind and fit spotlighting. Remove all furniture apart from a comfy couch and a few scatter cushions, and invest in a projector. Add the finishing touches with a few posters from your favourite movies, a shelf for your DVDs and a popcorn machine.

The dressing room
If your bedroom is a minefield of shoes, belts and discarded clothes, think about turning your box room into an open plan wardrobe, walk-in if its en suite. Start off with a few clothes rails and shoe tidies. Hang large mirrors and invest in a dimmer switch for that all-important flattering light. Finishing touches could include a wrought-iron trellis from the garden centre (useful for hanging clothes over and doubling up as a stylish dressing screen), and stackable wicker baskets for non-crease clothes, spare hangers and underwear.

The secret garden
If your living quarters are lacking in outdoor space, simply bring the outside in, with a secret garden in your spare room. Indulge in some floral wallpaper, complemented by green accessories – curtains, rugs and cushions. Treat yourself to a set of The Pier’s flower chairs, (pictured left) before making a trip to the garden centre for a car boot full of houseplants (advice on indoor gardening).

The sanctuary
Ensure you get your recommended daily allowance of peace and quiet by transforming a corner of your home into a designated chill out zone. Keep walls and furnishings neutral and clutter to a minimum. Treat yourself to a hammock or large floor cushions, fill with scented candles and aromatherapy oils, keep a bottle of your favourite tipple, and put on your most relaxing tunes or meditation CDs. Last but not least, hang a ‘do not disturb’ sign on the door, and breathe a sigh of relief…
