Ghosts and ghouls come out to play this month, so where better to spend a weekend break than a hotel renowned for its spooky occurrences?
Have a haunted Halloween in one of Britain’s ghostly hide-outs.
Castle Stuart, the Highlands of Scotland
Lock yourself up among the tartan carpets, open fires and historic paintings of this romantic castle in the Scottish Highlands. Unless you’ve nerves of steel though, you might want to steer clear of the three-turret room at the top of the east tower. Back in the days of the Earl of Moray’s residence, a local poacher was dared to bed down here to prove it wasn’t haunted. His stunt didn’t quite pay off – he was found dead in the courtyard the following morning, fear frozen on his face. Did he jump or was he pushed? More.
Old Hall Hotel, Sandbach, Cheshire
A grey lady, a white lady, an old beekeeper and numerous other ghostly apparitions convene in this Tudor manor house offering luxury accommodation along with a good fright or two. Don’t believe in ghosts? Best then stay in room 11, where you won’t be at all perturbed to jump out of bed at 3am convinced that the room is on fire. The hotel has been featured on television, holds regular psychic nights and boasts a 24hour ghostcam in reception! More.
Muncaster Castle, Lake District, Cumbria
Dubbed one of the most haunted buildings in England, Muncaster Castle (main image) is a regular, err, haunt of paranormal investigators. Visitors report hearing footsteps and children’s cries, feel unexplainable cold spots, and suffer disturbed sleep. If that doesn’t sound like too much fun, the old stables have recently been renovated into accommodation and appear, so far at least, to be ghost free. But if you are after a spooky stay, why not book a place on one of Muncaster’s ghost sit-ins, a nighttime vigil of the haunted Tapestry Room. More.
The Ragged Cot, Hyde, Stroud
Old-world charm meets reminders of cold-blooded murder in this seventeenth century inn. The story goes that one cold night in December 1760, one Bill Claves pushed his wife and child down the stairs as they tried to prevent him leaving home to conduct a drunken midnight robbery. He hid their bodies in a trunk, but he failed to cover his tracks and was hung for the crime. It is said that the ghosts of his wife and child now haunt the Ragged Cot. More.
Baskerville Hall, Powys, Wales
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of The Hound of the Baskervilles was a regular visitor to the hall and was much inspired by this creepy location. Find out why on a paranormal weekend where you might catch a glimpse of a white lady in the rose garden, a male apparition on the grand staircase and things that go bump in the corridors. More.
