Detox or retox?

Scientists say it’s all rubbish; the industry says it works? So should we be detoxing?

The detox business is growing rapidly. But scientists have recently announced that the many diets, tablets and drinks claiming to flush out toxins are completely pointless. Who should we believe?

The body – say the scientists – is more than capable of ridding itself of toxins. The gut prevents bacteria and many toxins from entering the body, while the liver contributes to breaking down harmful chemicals which are then excreted by the kidneys. Fresh air, tap water and a good night’s sleep are all that are needed, they insist, and anything more is a waste of time and money.

The beauty industry, on the other hand, claim that a bi-annual detox – such as those undertaken by enthusiast Carol Vorderman – using anything from detox tablets to detox socks, body wraps, special diets or drinks, are a more effective way of removing harmful substances from the body. Products claim to be able to aid in weight loss, beat cellulite, banish bloating and contribute to glowing skin.

These conflicting opinions aren’t much help to the consumer. Who’s right? Well perhaps the truth lies somewhere in between. A 2005 US health report found that while the body can, in truth, get rid of its own harmful toxins, detox products can boost the body’s own capabilities and can, in some cases, flush out substances more effectively than the body could alone.

Whether you side with science or would rather trust the high street, isn’t it worth trying both to make your own mind? We’ve come up with the various ways you can flush out those nasty toxins…

The health & beauty industry way – mild
If you listen to the health and beauty industry then the most effective way to detox is to do the diet. This means eating certain things in abundance (fresh fruit and vegetables either raw or slightly steamed, and water), certain things in moderation (brown rice, fish, lean meat, nuts and seeds), and avoid certain foods (wheat, dairy products, white bread, pasta and rice, sugar and salt, alcohol and caffeine).

What then of all the detox-aiding products on the high street? Well most should only be used in conjunction with the above diet. Firm favourites with beauty industry experts include: Weekend DetoxPlan from HealthAid (a two-day antioxidant boosting cleanser costing £7.99) and the Detox Box (a ten-day toxin eliminator programme priced £27.99) from A. Vogel.

The health & beauty industry way – extreme
Fancy the most extreme detox session known to man? Get yourself a flight to Thailand and book yourself into the New Body And Mind Centre on Koh Samui

beach. Various programmes are available but most include a total fast (you’ll consume only fruit and vegetable shakes), daily colonic irrigation, yoga and breathing exercises, ocean swims, various supplements and massage. Prices start from £732 for the eight day programme.

Detox breaks are also available at the Colon Cleanse and Detox Retreat in Marbella, at Wellbeing Now in Berkshire and Juicing For Health in Surrey.

The scientists’ way – au naturel
Do your utmost to get at least eight hour’s sleep every night – sip chamomile tea before bed, take relaxing baths and turn in early. Up your take of water - see our feature for the benefits and clever tips on how to get your two litres a day. And make sure you get plenty of fresh air. If you’re an urbanite this might not be so easy, so check out our feature on farm breaks in the UK.
