If you’re more used to a fortnight of sun and sand than a physical trek of discovery, try introducing some spirituality into your next holiday. The Greek Islands are littered with ancient monuments and secluded landscapes. Read up on your resort and get off the beaten track for an afternoon. Taking time out to see a place of pilgrimage can help you decide if a full on trek is really for you.
Likewise, Cyprus combines ancient basilicas and picture perfect countryside. If it’s more than a day off the beaten track you’re looking for, Style Tours offers group tours of the Island’s most sought after pilgrim spots. Perfect for those more keen on the final destination than the walk itself.
Living The Gospel organises similar excursions through the startling geography and Christian ruins of Turkey, the churches and monasteries of Syria and the ubiquitous examples of the classical world on offer in Rome.
Not for the faint-hearted: Every year in August, tens of thousands of people gather in the Polish capital of Warsaw to undertake the long and arduous walk to the country’s most sacred place: the shrine of the Black Madonna in Czestoshowa, an icon believed to have been painted by St Luke on a table made by St Joseph for a holy family in Nazareth.
Pilgrims cover 300-kilometres on foot, walking ten hours a day for nine days. Many are deeply religious. Others use the walk as a time away from the distractions of everyday life - a walking retreat and a meditation, not to mention a good workout.
In a similar vein, the medieval route to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain is one of the most famous Christian pilgrimages in the world. The alleged burial place of St James, one of the twelve apostles, pilgrims have been walking the route since the tenth century.
Whether you want to explore a new faith, enjoy good scenery or just try something totally different, India is the place to do it. Pilgrimage India guides the adventurous to some of the most visited, as well as some of the most secluded pilgrimage sites in the world. Climb 5,000 feet to the cave containing the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, or bathe in Ganga, the river swirling around the Hindu faith’s holiest city.
