Regeneration is at the core of The Castleford Project

Regeneration is the process by which cities, towns or neighbourhoods improve themselves. More often than not, it is focussed on improving neighbourhoods so that they become socially, economically and environmentally self-sustaining. Almost always, regeneration requires a combination of physical, economic and social change driven by the public, private and voluntary sectors.

The Castleford Project's programme of improvements to the physical environment seeks to help the town become a better place for the people who live and work in the town, present and future employers and investors.

The Project schemes were identified by local people as priorities for improving Castleford. By ensuring local people set the agenda and take part in the Project at all levels, the Project aims to ensure that its work lasts for the long term and empowers people to lead on the future of their community.

As the Project progresses, a programme of public events have taken place in the town designed to attract the interest and attention of the region and nation.

As a result of the activities of the Project in the town, several new community and residents groups have formed. Consultants in design and regeneration have worked closely with people to help them plan the future of the town and small working groups have formed around each project with a local representative at the helm.

The Castleford Project is now building in to an integrated programme of regeneration, featuring extensive local participation, outstanding architectural and landscape design and a network of links to the worlds of business, social development, art and culture.

Similar programmes have been run in England in the past, under the names of City Challenge and the Single Regeneration Budget. The Castleford Project is different because of the range of its activities, popular accountability and the lead given by a television broadcaster.
