Public appeal to name new underpass

Castleford folk are being called on to help name a new public space, created during the next phase of improvements to the town centre's Tittle Cott underpass. The scheme is being developed as part of the Castleford Project -the world's first televised regeneration scheme. It is being developed in partnership by Wakefield Council, Channel 4, regeneration agencies and the local community as part of wider initiatives to improve the Castleford area.

The first phase of the new underpass was installed in December 2005 funded by Wakefield Council and Edinburgh House Estates – improving public access to the town centre shopping area from Castlefields.

Work is now underway on designs for the stylish landscaping scheme to enhance the new style Tittle Cott underpass. Architects DSDHA are keen to hear local people's views on what the new space should be called.

They have called on local historian Brian Lewis and artist Martin Richman to help them highlight proposed new designs for the new public space, landscaping and lighting scheme at an event on Thursday February 16 at 2 Sagar Street.

You will get the chance to hear about the history of this area of town and share your stories about why the underpass became called 'Tittle Cott' in the first place. Go along between 5-9pm and share your stories and views. The best ideas could find a place of their own on the new landscaping scheme and help decide its new official name. Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Phil Dobson said:" This is a great opportunity for local people to really make their mark on the new improved underpass and new public area. I hope as many people as possible go along, give their views about a suitable name and share stories past and present. We're now looking forward to seeing this fabulous scheme brought to life."
