Castleford riverside gets clean treatment
A riverside in Castleford will get a much needed clean-up thanks to officers at the Environment Agency and local volunteers.
The Environment Agency is working with the local Neighbourhood Action Team and Wakefield Metropolitan District Council on Wednesday March 8 to clear the banks of the River Aire of debris, litter and overgrown foliage.
A team of 25, including local community volunteers, will work together to improve the quality of the riverside, to encourage recreational use by the local community.
The one-day project, which will take place on the River Aire off Lock Lane, is part of the Castleford Regeneration Scheme which began in February 2004, a collaborative initiative between local organisations and Channel 4 to develop community improvements projects totalling over £100 million in the West Yorkshire town and surrounding area.
Louis Harvey, environment officer at the Environment Agency said: "The riverbank clean-up forms part of our aim to create a better place for the people of Castleford. These projects are valuable because they have an immediate positive impact on the environment that the local community can see."
The work follows a similar project that took place last year with the Environment Agency and local volunteers, to clean up the nearby Lock Lane allotment site.
