It's the toughest challenge known to womankind yet. To get the children to school, on time, with their PE kit, lunchboxes and book bags AND look the bee's knees yourself.
Others sail effortlessly up to the school gate with their hair elegantly straightened; wearing simple separates which set off their glowing skin and perfectly nude lipstick. OK, so that's never going to be you. But don't think that no-one notices your raggedy old fleece and trainers as you ditch the children at the gate and race off to work.
You've got three audiences every morning and each of them will be making judgements on your appearance as you drop your darling ones off this September.
For a start, there are all the other parents who will check you out. They'll want to know if you could be a new friend or just someone to be avoided. We all know the cruel law of the playground is still acted out by some parents at the school gates.
Then there are the teachers. If you turn up looking frazzled, out of sorts and generally chaotic, they'll assume that's how things are at home. It's important that you appear to be in control, so that the staff believe your kids are getting good support at home.
Finally, don't forget your kids. No child wants to be shown up by their parents and your children aren't any different. They want you to look ordinary but trendy when you pick them up from school, or they'll be embarrassed.
Don't worry, here are some simple tips to ensure that you look the part when it comes to dressing for school.
- Don't overdo the dressing up. Too much make-up, 6 inch stiletto heels or too tight clothes will only alienate other parents. Don't see this as an opportunity to sparkle – leave that for parties.
- Do wear comfortable shoes if you're walking or cycling to school. There's no point getting blisters just to look good.
- Choose a winter coat which is flattering and fashionable. You'll be wearing it every day, it's worth spending a little more to make sure you look great and feel warm.
- Remember to factor in some time for YOU to get ready each morning. Even if you have to get up ten minutes earlier, it's worth it.
- Hone down a simple make-up routine which takes just three minutes – and do it every day. Ensure your children understand that you have a routine too. Tinted moisturiser, mascara and lip-gloss will make you feel more confident and happier to chat to other parents.
- Put the whole family's clothes out every night – and that includes yours too. Make sure your handbag is packed and your keys are always in the same place.
- Try to avoid wearing boring jeans EVERY day. Boots and a skirt can look great or Capri pants with pumps look cool.
- Don't be a slave to fashion but keep an eye on trends by reading magazines or newspapers. That simple rule of updating accessories can ensure that you don't look like the oldest mum on the block.
- Do make sure you check yourself in the mirror before you leave the house – however stressed and late you all are. Just to make sure you're not still wearing your slippers...
