Uchenna’s top 5 healthy teeth tips:

  • Brush up your Skills
    Simply brushing twice a day with a good fluoride toothbrush helps to remove plaque bacteria, meaning that they can't release the toxins that destroy your gum tissue. I recommend an electric toothbrush for efficiency.

  • Clean your Tongue
    Bacteria lurk on the back of the tongue, and it is a good idea to use a tongue cleaner at least once a day. This instrument is specifically designed to remove bacteria embedded on the surface of the tongue. If you haven’t got one, try brushing your tongue with your toothbrush instead. Up to 85 per cent of bad breath can be controlled by removing this bacteria and they are also responsible for causing tooth decay and gum disease

  • Quit Smoking
    Smoke deprives your gums of oxygen and vital nutrients. The chemicals from the tobacco also kill the good cells in your mouth that try to fight the disease. This is why smokers are four times more likely to get gum disease.

  • The F Word
    Floss, floss, floss! We know it’s important but most of us don't do it. Flossing regularly is the best way to remove debris from between your teeth and keep your mouth clean. If you don't believe this has an effect, just smell the floss after it's been used &ndash: you'll become a flossing convert!

  • Befriend your Dentist and Hygienist
    Regular examinations will help spot any disease early. The dentist or hygienist should be carrying out a test called a BPE (Basic Periodontal Exam) Score every time they see you. This is a way to measure gum disease and alerts them if you need treatment. They will also spot any decay early and can sometimes prescribe mouthwashes that may help stop the disease.
