Harriet LambLamb has been director of The Fairtrade Foundation since 2001 and it’s moved from a fringe brand to one happily occupying the mainstream with sales increasing by 40% each year.

Fairtrade guarantees local producers a minimum (and fair) price for their produce as well as a 5% premium which they can invest as they see fit. In return, they have to abide by the rules of the foundation: no child labour and a ban on the use of dangerous pesticides.

Lamb is the ideal ambassador for the Fairtrade movement, passionate about standing up for what she believes is right. It has not been easy taking on the powerful multinationals though, and boats carrying Fairtrade bananas have been deliberately held up until the produce turned to unsellable brown mush. But thanks in a large part to Lamb’s dogged determinism, Fairtrade is making real inroads into the nation’s psyche. Marks and Spencer only stocks Fairtrade tea and coffee and all of Sainsbury’s bananas and its own brand sugar also bears the label.

Lamb’s story demonstrates the power that individuals can wield and what can be achieved if they really put their mind to it. Her vision and absolute dedication to Fairtrade principles has made a real difference and she remains an important ambassador for this ever-growing cause.
