Saab - Move Your Mind
Visionaries

Every generation has its visionaries – independent thinkers who challenge convention and change perceptions. A current example is Sir Bob Geldof, increasingly celebrated for his tireless dedication to charity work rather than his music alone.

Since its conception in 1947, Saab has regularly challenged convention. After the Second World War, Svenska Aeroplan AB decided there was no longer the demand for the aircraft it had been manufacturing for the past decade and decided to strike out in a bold new direction: designing automobiles. Its first prototype, the Ursaab, designed by 16 aircraft engineers, raised eyebrows and attracted admiration for its innovative aerodynamic design and advanced technology.

Over the past sixty years, Saab has remained at the cutting-edge of car design. It was the first car manufacturer to introduce seatbelts as standard in 1958, as well as the first to provide side impact protection through reinforcement in the doors back in 1972.

Turbocharging was another Saab innovation, providing increased power without an increase in weight and fuel consumption.

And proving the simple ideas are often the best, Saab chose to place the ignition between the gear lever and handbrake, rather than in the standard spot beside the steering wheel – so the ignition is right next to your hand as you fasten your seat belt.

Unsurprisingly, Saab continues to be inspired by the actions of modern day visionaries. It has joined forces with Channel 4 to celebrate those people who embody independent thinking and are unafraid to strive for what they believe in. For more information, please click here »
