Life after 50 inevitably brings with it some major life changes. Some of these are tremendously exciting, such as the arrival of a new grandchild or the sudden freedom to travel. Others can be scary, such as the prospect of divorce, redundancy or serious illness.

But whatever life brings, there are ways to prepare for change and deal with the transition successfully when it arrives. If you have the right attitude and aren’t afraid to ask for help, life-changing events that seem scary can often be made more manageable – and maybe even turned into a positive.

The nature of work has changed immensely in recent decades, and this has had huge benefits for the over 50s. There are far more options now for those who choose to stay in work, and as such it’s never too late to make a career change.

But whether you’re thinking of learning new skills, starting a whole new career or going into partial retirement, it’s important to recognise what you have to offer. Most over 50s have more transferable skills than they realise – from communication to crisis management – and recognising your true value as an employee is often the most important step.
