Number Crew 1: Shape and Space 1
Programme 5: Turning Moments – Describing Movements

Outline

Bradley's fitness club is going well. Matthew demonstrates different movements with his toys and introduces a song about moving and turning. Everything seems fine until Mrs Penguin keeps walking straight ahead instead of turning as Bradley orders. Matthew explains how to solve the problem using his train set. Baby Bunting surprises everyone by getting Mrs Penguin to go forwards and turn at the same time.

Recommendations for Use

It is recommended that teachers preview the programmes to note the places they might wish to stop the tape to encourage discussion. The programmes can be used as part of the introductory class activity, where the tape is stopped at pre-planned points and the whole class is encouraged to identify and review the problems posed or predict answers. Alternatively the programmes can be used as part of the main teaching activity before children pursue their differentiated tasks. At times it may be useful to use a whole programme as part of the plenary/last session of a lesson to allow children to review their own understanding of the work they have been doing and allow teachers to assess the children informally as they watch the programme.

Activities

Before viewing

  • Demonstrate moving forwards and backwards, turning to the left and turning to the right. Ask the children to pretend to be robots and follow your instructions.

After viewing

  • Talk about Matthew's challenge: Can you find things that go forward or turn or do both at the same time? Have a good look!
  • Have a collection of things for the children to examine. Have some things that are hinged, and some things that move in circles like windmills or spinning tops. Ask some of the children to make a set of objects and include 'an odd one out'. Other children take turns to try to guess which object this is.
  • Telling the time and playing with a clock face is useful experience for some children. It helps them to understand 'whole turns' and 'half turns'.
