Teens on Trial

Activities

Before viewing

Split the class into two groups of jury members and discuss the following issues, making note of the general views amongst the group:

  1. Discuss how serious you think binge drinking is.
  2. Discuss your own experiences of binge drinking.
  3. What was the outcome of your personal experiences with binge drinking?
  4. Discuss why you think teenagers drink too much.
  5. Discuss whether you can justify binge drinking because teenagers are bored and have nothing else to do.
  6. Discuss how you deal with someone who is binge drinking – should you consider punitive or educational measures?
  7. Discuss the best way to stop people binge drinking.
  8. Discuss whether you think ASBOs help to reduce the numbers of teenagers hanging around on the streets and behaving abusively when drunk.
  9. Discuss whether you think teenagers put themselves in dangerous situations when they drink.

After viewing

As one group compare the views of the two juries before the show and then consider how your views may have been changed by Rachel's case.

  1. Discuss why you think Rachel binge drinks.
  2. Discuss what course of action should be taken to encourage her to stop behaving in such an anti-social manner.
  3. Discuss whether Rachel bows to peer pressure and is trying to be cool in front of her friends.
  4. Should Richard worry more about getting into trouble with the police?
  5. Do you think the defence case was strong, would you have defended her differently?
  6. Do you think the prosecution case was strong, would you have prosecuted her differently?
  7. Has watching Rachel's story changed your views on binge drinking?
