PROGRAMME 7: TEXAS

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

00:00 – 03:15

Dave has a treat up his sleeve for Hayley and Lauren. They're going to travel from Manchester to Austin, Texas, to trace the life of a cow, and see for themselves how it starts life in a field and ends up as 680 quarter-pounders.

03:16 – 07:34

The girls are staying on a real Texan ranch, home of their mentor Nick Cole. He takes them to a cattle auction, where they bid for their favourite cow – and end up paying rather more for her than they'd intended…

07:35 – 09:39

Back at the ranch, it's time for some hands-on cattle care. Hayley and Lauren brace themselves to tag and vaccinate their new acquisition. They even give her a name – Manchester Moo. But Nick's more pragmatic. If the vet says she's not up to scratch, then the girls' cow will be turned into hamburgers.

09:40 – 10:39

Nick's mother, Dolly, teaches the girls how to make burgers, Texan-style. Fresh from the barbecue, they're delicious.

10:40 – 14:17

It's day two, and the girls are lending a hand on the farm – except Lauren's too scared of the cattle to get out of the truck. With Nick's encouragement, the girls pluck up the nerve to pin down a calf while it's being castrated. He didn't feel a thing, honest!

14:18 – 17:19

John the vet helps Lauren do something she never imagined in her wildest dreams – check a cow internally for pregnancy! She's really excited when she can feel the calf. The girls are feeling bad about eating their bovine friends, but that doesn't stop them tucking in at the burger bar.

17:20 – 19:10

Day three begins with sad news. Manchester Moo didn't make the grade, and she's been dispatched by the local butcher. There's no time for tears, because the girls have just 30 minutes to transform her minced remains into burgers.

19:11 – 22:24

The girls grill up a storm, and present the end results to Tiffany, President of the Texan Beef Association, for judging. They've done pretty well for beginners, and both girls get good marks.

22:25 – 23:31

Hayley and Lauren are feeling guilty about eating Manchester Moo, but there's a happy ending. Dave just wanted the girls to think they were eating her – she wasn't killed after all. The girls are really pleased to see their cow, but they'll definitely look at burgers in a very different light from now on.

23:32 – 24:10

Back at home, Lauren and Hayley cook a tasty burger for Dave.
