PROGRAMME 2: NAPLES

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

00:00 – 03.25

Dave Berry meets 17-year-old south London pizza fanatics, AJ and Daniel, and surprises them with two tickets to Naples, home of the original pizza.

03.26 – 06:04

The lads travel from Croydon to Naples, where they're taken to the market to meet Enzo, an expert pizza chef.

06:05 – 09:32

AJ and Daniel shop for ingredients, and struggle to make themselves understood as they buy mozzarella, pepperoni, olives, tomatoes and flour. They're surprised to see how poor Naples is, and are impressed with the Italians' friendliness.

09:33 – 12:04

Enzo demonstrates how to make a simple, authentic Italian pizza. It tastes delicious, and very different from the pizzas the boys are used to back at home.

12:05 – 16:29

It's day two, and the boys travel to a buffalo farm, where Ginnaro explains how much milk the buffalo yield in a year. The boys take turns to don rubber gloves and attempt to milk a buffalo. Daniel can't squeeze out a single drop, but AJ gets the knack. It's a messy job, and Daniel gets in a sulk because his new trainers are smothered in buffalo dung.

16:30 – 18:08

Back in Naples, the boys have dinner with an Italian family, and their hostess Gabriella plies them with mouth-watering homemade food. The boys are overwhelmed by the warmth of their Italian hosts and are beginning to realise that you don't need to be well-off in order be happy.

18:09 – 22:12

The next day the lads are off to the best pizzeria in town, where they'll prepare a pizza in front of stern judge Antonio Pace, President of the Real Neapolitan Pizza Association. AJ starts confidently, but the end result is half-burned, half underdone, and scores only 3 out of 10. Daniel fares marginally better, but his roughly handled, oily pizza only musters 5 points.

Despite their low marks, Enzo is proud of his guys because they've tried so hard. He's really touched when they present him with a T-shirt to say thanks.

22:13 – 24:00

As the boys look out over Naples for the last time, they reflect on what they've learned. Now they've seen how people who are not at all wealthy can still be friendly and good-humoured, it's made them realise that they have no excuse for getting into bad moods. Daniel's inspired to pursue his dreams, wise up at school and get more focused. Both boys have learned about themselves as people. Back home, they use their new culinary skills to make a pizza for Dave.
