TAKE AWAY MY TAKEAWAY

PROGRAMME 9: HONG KONG

OUTLINE

00:00 – 03:50

Dave is sending Amy and Anna on a journey of 13,000 miles, from Newport to Kowloon, the heart of Hong Kong's culinary area.

03:51 – 05:43

They meet their mentor Chung, a chef and restaurateur, and take off into the market to find the ingredients for a seafood chow mein.

05:44 – 07:52

Like magpies, the girls pick up a bit of this, a bit of that. They're shocked by the fish stall, where the produce is still very much alive. They've bought way too much, but – miraculously – somewhere in those bags are the right ingredients for their dish.

07:53 – 11:41

Patiently, Chung demonstrates the delicate process of preparing the fish for a proper chow mein, but the girls aren't watching. They really haven't grasped what this trip is all about – but at least they like the flavour of the finished dish.

11:42 – 13:46

Day two sees the girls going out to Hong Kong's biggest fish farm, where their task is to catch bream and sea bass for a restaurant. Anna's scared of falling into the breeding pens.

13:47 – 15:20

Leo, the manager, shows them how to catch the fish. It's easy to hook them out of the water, but clubbing them to death is not so simple.

15:21 – 17:22

Now for the grisly part – gutting the fish. Anna and Amy aren't keen, but there's nothing for it, and eventually they both get their hands bloody.

17:23 – 18:48

Chung starts the third day by taking the girls to a temple to ask for good luck when they cook for their judges later on.

18:49 – 20:48

At the Rainbow Seafood Restaurant, the girls are distracted from the job in hand yet again and pick out all the wrong fish. Mio Hani, food critic, arrives to judge their cooking. She's the one who'll need the good luck!

20:49 – 23:01

The girls haven't a clue how to cook the dish, so they throw in everything they can think of, and round it all off with a generous glug of oil. The judges' verdict? It's more like greasy Italian pasta than a Chinese chow mein.

23:02 – 23:26

Tasting the ultimate seafood chow mein hasn't done much to change Amy and Anna's outlook on food. They might use a bit of fresh fish when they get home… but don't hold your breath.

23:27 – 24:00

Back home, the girls cook for Dave, and once again they manage to put a Mediterranean spin on an oriental dish. At least he likes it!
