Take Away My Takeaway

TAKE AWAY MY TAKEAWAY

PROGRAMME 4: CHINA

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

00:00 – 03.32

Dave springs a surprise on St Albans boys Adam and Danny – they're going to China to brush up on their knowledge of their favourite takeaway dish, sweet and sour pork.

03:32 – 04:26

The boys fly to Sha Tin, a town in China that's close to the Hong Kong border, where they meet their mentor, chef and restaurateur Vivi Cheung.

04:27 – 08:20

Phrase book in hand, the lads plunge into the market, on the hunt for the ingredients for a traditional sweet and sour. They don't do too badly, but Vivi takes them back to pick up a couple of vital items.

08:21 – 11:11

Vivi demonstrates the precise steps it takes to create a delicious sweet and sour. First, fry the vegetables, then the pork. Make the sauce, mix it all together and hey presto! The boys sample the dish with chopsticks. It's tastier and far healthier than anything they've eaten back home.

11:12 – 13:34

Day two finds the would-be chefs en route to Mr Chow's organic vegetable farm, where they'll pick fresh vegetables for a very special dish. Adam's white trainers come to grief in the thick mud, and Vivi explains that the fields are smelly because the crops are fattened with 'human fertiliser'.

13:35 – 16:20

And now for a shop you won't find in Basingstoke – the snake seller. The boys are petrified are first, but conquer their nerves and learn to handle the snakes. They pick one to be expertly killed, skinned and neatly bagged. You can't get fresher than that.

16:21 – 17:22

Vivi cooks the snake, and the boys admit that it tastes pretty good.

17:23 – 20:42

It's day three, and the boys go to Hong Kong to cook for renowned food critic Reggie Ho. Their teamwork is great to start with, but then a row breaks out and cooking grinds to a halt.

20:43 – 22:03

The guests are arriving, and Vivi resolves the argument. Quick, it's time to cook! They arrange their dish attractively, and take it into the restaurant.

22:04 – 23:05

Vivi has taught them well. The dish looks great and tastes even better – 10 out of 10! The boys have had their cultural horizons broadened, and they've resolved to cook fresh food more often.

23:06 – 24:00

Back home, the pair cook up a sweet and sour for Dave, but the heat's up too high and we last see them wreathed in smoke.
