Launa for Self Portrait UK (2002)

Launa’s self-portrait is a statement about her own future and her concerns about the ways in which new technology controls and intrudes into our lives.

‘I wanted the viewer to question the possible technology of the future. A SIM card look-alike inserted in the eye holding all your information.’

To convey this in her self-portrait, Launa decided to focus on her eye as a symbol of her identity and character. Launa took a digital photograph of her eye and used computer design software to superimpose the image of a SIM card over the pupil and iris – a feature that is unique to us all.
