Component parts

The story
Engineers had to test various materials to use in the machine's different components.

Dyson products use very high quality materials to make them more robust and perform better. As well as pressed steel, many components in the Contrarotator™ are plastic injection moulded in a vast array of polymers such as, ABS through to high specification engineering polymers such as nylon, which are used for their increased strength and stiffness.

Dyson also used processes from other industries such as metal sintering, to make the gears, and die-casting to make the aluminium spiders that support each of the Contrarotator's™ drums.

Each process adds to the complexity of designing and engineering a product; not only do design engineers have to design the machine's components, but they also have to design the manufacturing tools that will produce them.
