Last Rights

First transmitted in June 2005

Channel 4's three-part political thriller, Last Rights, explores a world where political apathy has reached a menacing and dangerous level. Set in 2009, this is a warning of what could happen if ordinary people succumbed to apathy and failed to hold their political leaders to account.

Written by Clive Bradley, acclaimed author of The Vice, and starring Charles Dance (Gosford Park and A Cry in the Dark), Ashley Walters (Bullet Boy), Philip Glenister (Clocking Off and State of Play) and Keira Malik (Messiah), Last Rights traces an increasingly threatening British political and social landscape through the eyes of politically disengaged Max (Ashley Walters).

This website is full of information, including an outline of the plot, an exploration of what citizenship really means, a glossary of citizenship and media studies terms, a gallery with interpretations of the photos, and interviews with two of the stars, plus the writer and director.

We all need to arm ourselves with this information, particularly young people, whose future depends on them taking political responsibility and having the courage to act for what is right – and not just be bystanders in an increasingly ruthless world.
