Internet radioDay 5: Design |
Up until now, the design's been a bit of a nightmare. We've got a strong idea, but we're having trouble bringing it to life. Of course, you think you'll never find the answer and then you trip over it...
We've tried various approaches to the design, and none of them have really worked. Fortunately, the 'comic look' did give us the basis of our layout, and also solved another problem we were having - the idea of getting across our point in story format. After all, our story isn't really soap opera material and our narrative was sounding a bit artificial. We settled on using a comic-style box at the top of the page, with pictures of all our characters, and presenting the rest of the information in a more straightforward style.
Ange: "I thought about comic books. Sure, they have a lot of illustrations, but they present a story in lots of small boxes, or chunks. I had to present some ideas for tomorrow's meeting (Aargh!). Andy had re-written some of the text into a story-style and split it into two parts. The first part was a story about a friend getting his radio station shut down by the police because he didn't have a broadcasting licence. The second part was some information on broadcasting and the law. I decided to take the first part of the story and treat it in a comic book style. I made it stand out from the more detailed information, so that it was the most dominant part on the page. The detailed stuff was presented underneath; the idea being that you could read on if you were interested."

Often, as your site comes together, you'll find yourself going back to what you thought you'd already finished. Don't be afraid to ditch work you've already done if you find it doesn't work. Its easy to get stuck in a rut, so if a design isn't working, try starting from scratch, and forget what you've already done.
