Competition

Who can enter?
The competition is only open to students across the UK. To give everyone a fair chance, the competition will be judged on a national level across three categories:
- 13 - 15 year olds
- 16 - 17 year olds
- 18 - 19 year olds
Students can enter either as an individual or as a team of up to three people, but they can only enter the competition once. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each category.
Dates
Starts: 06 September 2004
Ends: 17 December 2004
All competition entries must be received by 17 December 2004.
Prizes
Winners will receive a new iPod mini, an exclusive VIP trip to the set of a top Channel 4 programme (last years' winners had a behind the scene tour of the Big Brother house) and their website will be showcased on the Channel 4 website www.channel4.com, reaching an audience of millions.
How to enter
Once students have made their website they must submit their website URL (address) online. There is a simple entry form to fill in on the Webit website www.channel4.com/webit/competition/form.shtml (external link).
Students can submit websites as individuals or in groups of up to three.
What the judges are looking for
We want students to be innovative, break the boundaries of website design and really demonstrate the power of the Internet to communicate messages and inspire and engage the target audience.
We will be looking out for the following:
- good website design
- use of web conventions
- richness and relevance of content
- accessibility
- enjoyable user experience
There are no limitations in terms of the subject matter of the websites or the number of web pages or technologies the websites use.
"The challenge for students is to not create just another website"
James Estill, Senior Producer, Channel 4
What teachers need to do
Many students may already have experience in making a website or will be able to make their website with little, if any, support from teachers. However, in order for them to benefit most from the project, we recommend that you use the Webit lesson plans or direct them to the Webit website which gives step-by-step instructions on how to make a website www.channel4.com/webit (external link).
See the example websites for creative and technical advice on how to make a website. We recommend that you or an ICT colleague read this to assist your students with any queries they may have.
