Big Brother in your school

Day 3: Planning the CCTV website

We have another meeting to make decisions about site content - what should the site say and how can we make it interesting? We've got a stack of information about CCTV in schools, but we're not sure where to start. Amanda suggests we have a 'brain dump' to make our minds up about site content. We get a large sheet of paper and a marker pen and write down all the information we want to include on the website.

We think it's important to cover the story behind CCTV and how it's used in schools. The only problem is that this information's a bit dry and uninspiring. We all know that if the site isn't interesting, visitors will get bored and go to another website. Guy thinks that if the site looks good and is designed well, visitors will stay - but Dom thinks this isn't good enough and says the most important thing is that the site content grabs the audience. At this point the conversation between Guy and Dom gets heated and Guy leaves the room.

Basically team working is not always easy - especially if you put two stubborn personalities together! Once people have calmed down, we carry on with the meeting. We all throw in our content ideas and decide that the most interesting angle is what teachers and students think about CCTV in schools.

Dom: "We should visit a local school with CCTV and talk to teachers and students about what they think of it. Is it an invasion of privacy? Does it really work?"

It's a kind of Eureka moment! Amanda agrees to arrange a visit to a local school and a Police station. We all think about the questions we should ask the people we interview.

We start to sketch out a site map and decide to feature an online debate - are you for or against CCTV in your school? The site could present the arguments and get site visitors to vote. This would help bring the content to life. Brilliant!

We leave the meeting much happier and feel reassured that the website is heading in the right direction. We each have a few tasks to do before the next meeting:

  • Guy's going to make a start on the overall look of the site
  • Amanda's going to organise interviews with teachers, students and the Police
  • Dom's going to start writing the site content.
