FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: I recently turned 20 but designed a site whilst I was 19. Can this be entered?

A: Unfortunately we cannot accept websites if the entrant is over the age of 19 at the start of the competition (06 September 2004). We know this means you narrowly miss out but we need to be fair to the other entrants.

Q: Can I use any software to make my website?

A: Yes, there are no restrictions on the software programs you use to make your entry. You can use a text editor or website authoring software e.g. Dreamweaver or FrontPage.

Q: What are the judging criteria for website entries?

A: We want you to be innovative, break the boundaries of website design and really demonstrate the power of the Internet to communicate messages and inspire and engage the target audience. We will be looking out for the following:

There are no limitations on the subject matter of the websites or the number of web pages or technologies sites use. For further information see the judges tips.

Q: How will you know that entries are from young people and that they are not trying to pass off other people's work as their own?

A: A team of web design professionals and executives from Channel 4 will judge the entries. Once we have a shortlist of potential competition winners we will be contacting individuals to verify their entries are their own. Any entries which do not comply with the competition rules will automatically be disqualified.

Q: Do you have any example entries? I'm interested in what the standard is?

A:We can't show you examples of actual entries. The demo sites we've featured on the teachers' site are useful because they break down the development process, but they won't help you with standards. The Webit competition is about communicating an idea in a really creative way and this is the standard we'll be judging, rather than how sophisticated the site is in a technical sense. Also check out the judges tips.

Q: Could you recommend any websites that give out free domain names and web hosting?

A:Free website hosting is offered by Tripod, Angelfire and Yahoo Geocities amongst others.

Don't worry too much about the domain name. We won't be judging entries on the quality of their domain names!

Also see our hosting page for more information on setting up your website and putting it live on the Internet.

Q: I entered my website into this competition however I am updating the site I submitted and introducing more interactivity. Can I re-enter it?

A: We are happy for you to enter an updated website but you can't enter two different websites.

Q: What do you mean by the Website URL on the competition entry from?

A: The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the address of the website you are entering into the competition. Its usually shown in the address bar at the top of your browser. For example, the URL for IdeasFactory is www.ideasfactory.co.uk. We need to know the URL for your website inorder to judge your competition entry.

Q: With regard to the prize of an iPod mini. If a team of three enterthe competition and win would they each get an iPod mini?

A: Yes, whether you enter as an individual or as a team of up to 3people you will each receive an iPod mini if you win the competition
