    APT Masterclass Title

APT Visuals comprises VJ wellREDman, and LC AlwaysB - we specialise in working with live bands and performance artists, combining old school camera mixing with modern VJ techniques. Where a traditional vision mixer will use the cameras and mixer to show on the screens the action on the stage, and a club VJ will use the screens for a performance using his own work or sampled material - we fuse the two concepts creating a show like a VJ but using and manipulating the bands performance as a key ingredient.

AlwaysB fuses his traditional film/tv industry training in camera techniques with his hobby of staff twirling and performance art using a camera mounted on a monopod resulting in unorthodox but highly successful camerawork. wellREDman has been a VJ for 4 years; his transition in the last year from traditional club vjing to working with bands has seen him go from small clubs to playing large arenas with chart act Public Domain. Recent highlights have also included collaboration with the Bays, and performing with Lamb on their farewell shows, which have been recorded for release on DVD

Its kind of hard to describe what it is we do because the set up, and way we use it varies from show to show, going from turning up and busking with a band we've never even heard before to the Lamb shows where we were running a five man film crew at the same time as doing our show. So for the purposes of this piece we'll describe the rig we're putting together for our upcoming UK tour with the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Apart from screens and projectors (which are generally dictated by the venue) our rig contains five main elements,

     CAMERAS
Our camera set up will be one operated camera and six mini "bullet" cameras mounted in mic stands. The bullet cams are only security cameras but they are at the highest resolution attainable before the massive jump in resolution and cost up to the Toshiba 3 chip bullet cams. The security cams we use are between 420 & 480 lines of resolution, we wouldn't recommend using less than this. Try and use identical cameras because if they all have a regular sync value there is less glitching between cuts on the switch box. The main operated camera is a 3 chip Sony PD150.
     VIDEO SOURCES

We use two types of video source, clips triggered from a Shuttle PC running VJamm2, and longer sequences played back from DVD. The signals from both of these are sent to both mixers, letting me use them as both foreground items, or more texturally in the bottom layer of the mix.

     FX

We use a dedicated computer for applying effects; a second Shuttle PC running Visual Jockey (VJO) lets us use all the latest Freeframe effects.

     CONTROL SURFACES

VJamm is controlled via midi using a Behringer BCR midi controller, which also controls some of the Vjo effects. A Saitek x45 joystick and throttle set up, and a bank of midi footswitches provide additional effects control. The expression pedals on the footswitches also control the t-bars on the mixers, allowing mixing to be done using the feet, leaving hands free for triggering clips and controlling fx.
