Mary King
Singer/voice coach
Mary went to the Guildhall School of Music after a career begun in teaching. She then went on to Glyndebourne, where she sang the roles of Baba the Turk in The Rake's Progress, Marcellina in The Marriage of Figaro, and Mama/Tzippie in Where the Wild Things Are. She made her debut at the Royal Opera House in The Cunning Little Vixen. She has made many recordings for BBC Radio 3, and her concert work has taken her all over the world. She recently performed in the USA with the Cleveland Orchestra, Amsterdam with the Schonberg Ensemble, and at the Proms with the London Sinfonietta.
Mary has been involved in education and outreach work for 15 years. She has a busy private teaching studio and also teaches at the Royal Academy of Music on the musical theatre course. She is the artistic director of The Knack, a performance course for singers run by English National Opera, where she has recently been appointed the artistic associate.
Mary was also a panel member on Channel 4's Operatunity series in 2003 and is currently spending her free time (!) writing a book – with Tony Legge – about singing. It is due for publication next year.
