Actor and theatre director
Julia's West End theatre credits include Guys and Dolls and Sweeney Todd, for both of which she won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical, and Woman in Mind which earned her the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress. On Broadway she has appeared in Side By Side By Sondheim, which originated in London.
Julia's television appearances include Fresh Fields and the sequel French Fields (for which she was voted TV Times Favourite Female Comedy Performance for five consecutive years). Film credits include Hotel du Lac, Shirley Valentine and Bright Young Things and numerous radio performances include The Country Wife, A Room With A View and Follies.
As a theatre director she staged Stepping Out, Peter Pan, Hey Mister Producer and Steel Magnolias in London, Putting It Together in New York, and A Little Night Music in Tokyo. She has also adapted and directed a series of plays by JM Barrie for the radio.
