Director and dramaturge
A freelance director and dramaturge, Clive is music theatre consultant to the National Theatre where he is responsible to Nicholas Hytner for the development of new musical theatre work. He is also artistic advisor to the English Theatre Frankfurt where he has just directed acclaimed productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Closer in their new theatre.
Clive was an original co-founder of London's Bridewell Theatre – one of the UK's most imaginative and highly regarded small theatres – and was artistic director there from 2000 to 2002.
Clive directed the European premieres of Hello Again, Songs for a New World and Floyd Collins (listed among The Observer Top Ten Theatre Productions for 1999). He co-directed the world premiere of Stephen Sondheim's first musical, Saturday Night, and directed the world premiere of Stephen Clark and Andrew Peggie's Eyam. He devised and directed The Cutting Edge, There's Always a Woman and The Road You Didn't Take.
