SHAZNAY LEWIS
Shaznay's life has always revolved around making music. She was harmonising
with her mum's Bob Marley records when she was 8, and at 12 she was recording
radio shows on her first cassette player.
By the time Shaznay was 18, she had sung vocals on tracks by hip hop star,
Rodney Cee, before a chance meeting one night with Ben Volpellier, formerly
of 80s pop group Curiosity Killed The Cat. He teamed her with Mel Blatt and
Simone Rainford to form All Saints in 1995. The band signed to ZTT Records,
started playing club gigs and released two singles before they were dropped
and Simone moved on.
Reformed with Shaznay's old school friend Nichole Appleton and her sister
Natalie, their fortunes changed. All Saints had five number one singles,
released two studio albums and picked up two Brit Awards. For a time, they
were four of the most famous women in the UK but eventually it became obvious
the band had run its course.
For a while Shazney was held back by the fear that her new songs
would sound like All Saints, but by the end of 2002, made a
breakthough with 'Never Felt Like This Before' and realised
she had no preconceived style she must adhere to. Her album
Open was released earlier this year.
