Tempa Q&A

How has Chancers changed your life?
Chancers was a stepping stone for me to get where I need to be, primetime TV, even on a label it's hard to get that type of recognition, and also it's a good way of building up my fan base, putting Notts on the map, and to see if I could overcome the challenge of going to New York for three weeks with a bunch of strangers and comin out on top. You must admit, it takes guts!

What lessons did you learn?
No matter what, always stay true to yourself, and believe in yourself.

What most impressed you about New York?
The whole lifestyle. It's no joke, they live and breathe hip hop, rappers' whole determination to succeed, and their energy is amazing.

Who did you most enjoy meeting in New York?
Errrrrrrr, Kanye West, even though I was a bit sad I didn't get to joust on a remix with him, as I know he's feeling the UK. It was really nice to meet Ms Dynamite – she was cool and it's always nice to meet people that's inspiring and has achieved a lot. Also I look at her as a female that's come from the streets and has changed the game for the UK, not to mention she's got a child and she's on her second album (nuff respect).

Does the UK still have a lot to learn from US artists?
Yes but also the UK labels and industry has too. UK don't support our own talent enough.

How did you choose your stage name?
Couple men did, years ago in the studio, coz I always said what I thought no matter what, and on the mic I came across as real feisty, and up to challenge any man that wanted to battle.

Who has been your greatest influence?
Apart from my dad, who I thank for educating me in a variety of music from a young age, Nas, he's so lyrical, and I just admire him for his talent, especially when he was working with Large Professor.

What is the best thing about the music business?
The money and the power! If you get your foot in the door and you smash it you've got the potential to make nuff loot, that's if you're smart.

What is the worst thing about the music business?
I would have to say the lack of interest and support. Also the bigger labels wanna sign you then pop u out, instead of recognising that hip hop or rap has a huge domination in the music scene today, and has the potential to become the biggest selling style of music worldwide.

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?
Hopefully at the top! See you there. X.
