Curriculum links

Projects to support the scientific exploration of Wildlife Habitats include:

Dandelion Survey a national survey of this common weed!

Phenology Study a national survey to record data about seasonal events all year round!

The activities suggested in each project introduce and develop the use of databases, not only to collect and present information but also as a means to test hypotheses and answer questions posed by you, the teacher, or the children themselves.

Children use the data in activities within a scientific context to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in science, ICT and mathematics. The Phenology Study offers plenty of cross-curricular opportunities throughout the year.

Detailed curriculum links for England, Wales and Scotland are listed in the lesson plans that accompany each survey.

Communication and Wildlife Habitatstop

The Internet offers an ideal opportunity to collect much larger samples for surveys than is usually possible in school. It also enables schools to work together across the UK.

It's quick and easy to register your school in order to take part in the surveys. You can register for one or more survey and always return later to edit your details. Your colleagues may also be interested in the projects for 7-9 year olds: Our Bodies, Our Health.

Pupils from registered schools will be able to input data about wildlife habitats to the online database. The data will be available for interrogation through charts, tables and maps on the website.

Contact us to share ideas using the button on the home page.

Through this national survey, children will be able to see how large samples provide a more valid and reliable study than just using data collected in their own school.

Registered userstop

The teaching resources, including regularly updated results from data contributed by participating schools, are available prior to registration.

When your school is a registered user, you and your children will not only be able to contribute to the national database but also join with other schools in sharing results and findings, posing questions and taking an active part in the national projects.

Follow the links to the Registration page to sign up your school today!

Television and the Internettop

We need you to join us in these exciting and innovative multimedia projects using television and the Internet to gather and share national data about wildlife habitats.

This is a key area of the science curriculum for 9-11 year olds. The data collected by you and your pupils will contribute to a national survey linked directly to the QCA Scheme of Work for Science and the 4Learning Phenology Study.

The television programme provides a lively stimulus and context for the collection, analysis and understanding of data by children.

The website provides access to online databases for collecting and displaying information from schools across the UK, as well as a wealth of teaching and learning resources.
