Choose one or two of these ideas to explore
with your child:
- Go on a 'hat hunt' together. Try to find
hats or headgear from different cultures, as well as those which
might be used for dressing-up, (eg policeperson, firefighter,
nurse, builder, paper party hat, crown). Have fun trying them
on!
- Borrow books from the library about people
who wear things on their heads, showing that they belong to a
particular faith or religion. For example, Jewish men wear a small
skull cap, Muslim women cover their heads and Sikh men wear turbans.
Help your child to learn to respect other people's values and
customs as well as their own.
- Talk about people who wear hats as part of
a uniform - eg police. Ask: How do the police help us? Who else
helps us? Why do these people wear a special hat or uniform?
- Cut out pictures of hats from old clothing
catalogues and sort them into groups according to colour, or size,
or shape. If you have two pictures of each hat, make them into
'snap' cards by sticking them onto thin card (eg the back of a
cereal packet).
