Ideas

Choose one or two of these ideas to explore with your child:

  • Provide a variety of dressing-up clothes. Old clean dresses, hats or shoes from charity shops can be just as much fun as shop-bought outfits! Try to include clothes from different cultures. Encourage your child to fasten clothing themselves. (Take care that the items you provide will not cause your child to trip.)

  • Find some clothes which you or your child wore on a special occasion, perhaps a wedding veil or a robe worn at a naming ceremony. Tell your child about the event and show them pictures if you can. Talk about the difference between dressing up for fun and wearing something for an important event.

  • Find books out about special clothes connected with worship. This encourages respect for other people's cultures and beliefs.

  • Say some rhymes about clothes, eg:
Diddle, diddle dumpling, my son John
Went to bed with his trousers on,
One shoe off and one shoe on,
Diddle, diddle dumpling, my son John!
