• Print out the sheet by clicking on the 'activity (printable)' button at the bottom of the activity page.

  • Gather together the items needed, as in the first picture. Use an old clean plastic food tub e.g. margarine.

  • Push the plasticene onto the inside of the plastic tub until it sticks. Then push the straw into the plasticene to make a mast, as in the second picture.

  • Decorate the square piece of paper to use as a sail. Then stick it to the straw, as in the third picture.

  • See if the boat floats.

  • You could try making several boats, using different sized tubs. Also experiment with the position and size of the mast and sails. Can you make the boat more stable?

  • Finding out about things that float and sink will help your child develop knowledge and understanding of the world. Making a boat can also aid creative development.

  • Hoobletoodledoo!
