Take a look at the sky at night, either through a window or by going
outside. Encourage your child to talk about what he/she sees in the
sky. Are there any stars? What about a moon? What shape is the moon?
Try this again on a different night. What's different? What's the same?
Help your child to find out more about the sky and the stars by using
books from the library.
Discuss the difference between night and day. Why do we turn on the
lights at night? Why do we go to bed at night? Talk about the need for
sleep to rest the body and mind.
These activities help your child gather information to satisfy his/her
curiosity, thus developing knowledge and understanding of the world.
Sing or say the song:
Twinkle, twinkle little star, How I wonder what
you are.
Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky,
Twinkle, twinkle little star, How I wonder what you are.
Find some musical instruments to accompany the song. Let your child
explore sounds first, using a range of homemade instruments e.g. a spoon
and an empty biscuit tin as a drum, or a plastic container filled with
rice or dried peas as a shaker. Then have a go at playing as you sing
the song.
