Educational Games

1066
C4 Education are committing over
half the £4.5m budget in 2010 to
gaming projects; developing strong narrative games on a variety of themes and platforms. This is the largest commitment made by a UK broadcaster, and is causing a ripple of excitement in the UK indie gaming sector. Commissioned in parallel with the peak-time drama/ documentary of the same name, our 1066 game has had over 6.5 million plays since its launch in May 2009. It is now the number one search result for '1066' on Google.

Meanwhile, Smokescreen, which launched in October, is receiving plaudits from teachers and youth workers, as an innovative and fun way to educate teens about privacy, online identity and the risks in putting personal information online. Check out both the games on the links below, and if you're a teacher using them in the classroom, do get in touch, as we'd love to showcase your work in our monthly newsletter. Human Zoo

Human Zoo
This documentary explains how the scientific racism of the Nazis was not born in Germany, but has its roots in America and in the story of the human zoos; the public displays of 'exotic' and indigenous peoples.

The science of race inspired and fed the ideology of the Nazis, giving academic grounding to the 20th century’s greatest atrocity, the Holocaust. By understanding this story, we can understand the secret history of how science tried to advance theories of white supremacy, and the huge human cost of this ideology.

The Event: How Racist Are You?

How Racist Are You?
In 1968, in the wake of the assassination of Martin Luther King; an Ohio schoolteacher called Jane Elliott, created a controversial exercise to teach her nine-year-old pupils how susceptible we can all be to prejudice and bigotry, and what it feels like to be on the other side of arbitrary discrimination.

Now retired, Elliott is recreating her Blue-eyes/Brown-eyes exercise for a new Channel 4 documentary, with thirty adult British volunteers; men and women of different ages and backgrounds, instead of children. Four decades on, and in a different country, does the exercise still have something to teach us all?

The Family II

The Grewal family
Following the success of the Bafta nominated The Family in 2008, the Grewal family from Windsor will be the subject of this major observational documentary series for Channel 4. This year, there are nine family members, (one of whom is born during the series) and three generations all living under one roof.

2009 is a momentous year for the Grewal family and highlights of the series will include the birth of a new baby and a big, Indian wedding. Directed by David Clews, this year's series will be the first documentary of its kind to show British Asian life in such detail. The Grewals were filmed over a period of eight weeks with 28 cameras following them around the clock.

Series TX from 4 November at 9pm.

This year's students
It's time for Britain's journalists to better reflect Britain's diversity. Channel 4 has bursaries for students with knowledge of the Pakistani, Afro-Caribbean or Bangladeshi communities, to study for a postgraduate Diploma in TV and Current Affairs at City University. Students receive a bursary to assist with course and living expenses, plus work experience. Jamil Hussein, Faaiza Ahmed and Daniel Henry are this year's students. This month, we welcome 150 young people for a Work Experience Open Day. We are offering up to 80 work experience placements for 2010, to help 14-19 year old students, (currently in Greater London education), find out more about working in the media industry. Placements at Channel 4 and elsewhere are for one or two weeks, offering a variety of learning experiences across a range of areas from Finance and Sales, to Press and Publicity.
