Channel 4: Did Bricking It live up to your expectations?
Zac: Yes it did, Bricking It was just what I was looking for. It was a challenge and could be frustrating at times but was worth it. The pressure was on at the beginning but I looked up to the mastercraftsmen and saw where I could get to on completion of the project. I had experience with manual work before so the early mornings were not a problem.
Channel 4: What was the best thing about Bricking It?
Zac: From beginning to end the whole project was a good experience. I couldn't pinpoint one specific moment because there were so many. It was in no way predictable and was great never knowing what we were doing next. I also enjoyed working with all different kinds of people.
Channel 4: And the worst thing?
Zac: Being 20, I was the oldest in the group. Apprentices usually come straight from school at 16 years old and at times I felt I wasn't being treated like a 20 year old which could be a bit annoying. I didn't mind going through bad times because I knew I could get an apprenticeship at the end of it.
Channel 4: What was your high point?
Zac: When I put a door lining on, Robin, the carpentry mastercraftsman,
said it was the best door in the flat - that really boosted my confidence. Having only done carpentry for a couple of months, I was proud of
myself. The last day was also a high point - seeing the flat complete
when everything had come together.
Channel 4: And your low point?
Zac: I was off work for an operation near the end of the project.
I hated having to take days off because I knew I would be missing
things - I wanted to be there.
Channel 4: What do you think you'll do now?
Zac: I start an apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery in a couple of weeks. I am working for a really good company who do traditional woodwork. I will also study NVQ courses at college in Wood Occupations starting at the beginning of next year.
Channel 4: Any advice on working in construction?
Zac: I struggled to get apprenticeship, if it wasn't for Bricking
It I would still be looking now - I am lucky. I did all different
jobs - one minute I wanted to be in the Royal Air Force, the next
I wanted to be a graphic designer! I would suggest you give yourself
time and start getting ideas at an early age. Realise the importance
of learning a trade and call up companies to ask for work experience.
The Princes Trust are also good, they helped me with key skills like
communication.
