The Trainees

Sophia 'Soaps' Perowne

Soaps has many varied interests including acting and music. She says, “Although I'm smart, university is not for me.” When Soaps first left home she moved into a squat for five months which she feels gave her good life experiences of dealing with people from different backgrounds. It also gave her a chance to get her hands dirty fixing the electrics and water. Soaps is interested in electronics which she studied at school and is now keen to learn from experts. "More of a lad than a girl", she also has a leaning toward carpentry and the thought of a male-orientated building site does not worry her.

Bricking It Interview

Channel 4: Why do you want to work in the building trade?
Soaps: I enjoy physical and mental challenges alike. I like to take something that exists and change it for the better. I love gaining different experiences in a wide range of areas.

Channel 4: Why should you be on Bricking It?
Soaps: I'm a hardworking individual who works well within a team, creating new and interesting ideas. I have a creative working mind and enjoy applying this in a group environment bouncing thoughts off others.

Channel 4: Have you ever worked in the building industry before?
Soaps: Yes. Me and my father designed and landscaped our garden as well as general DIY and decorating about the house.

Channel 4: What are you hoping to achieve from Bricking It?
Soaps: A good introductory knowledge of all relevant trades of the industry as well as a few laughs and giggles along the way.

Channel 4: Is it harder than you expected?
Soaps: The physical work itself is not harder than I believed it would be. What I have found the hardest is training myself to live a working life not a partying lifestyle.

Channel 4: Do you think Bricking It is helping you to work with other people?
Soaps: This project has improved my people skills as I've learned how to get along with people I would not normally associate with.

Channel 4: Can you name two things you personally contribute to the team?
Soaps: I've been a good listener and helped some members talk about their personal difficulties providing peer support. I'm an intelligent, hardworking team player.

Channel 4: What have you learnt from Bricking It so far?
Soaps: So far on the project I've learned a range of skills from the simple rules and regulations to the proper use and handling of tools, I've learned the basics in all site trades and a lot about life, people and self/group motivation.

Since I've moved away from my friends and social life to live and work in London, my attitude has changed. It's a totally new way of life. I didn't realise prior to this how much of an effect it was going to have on me.

Channel 4: What do you think you will do after Bricking It?
Soaps: I hope to progress further in the world of work and succeed in a long-term career with a bit of luck after a fulfilled apprenticeship.

Channel 4: And finally...
Soaps: I'm a friendly, enthusiastic, motivated person. I'm confident in front of the camera and always willing to help, giving my all.
