Laurence feels he's stuck in a rut. Currently unemployed (at the time of web publication, Dec 2004), he's only had short-term jobs as a pizza delivery boy and retail salesman. These unfulfilling jobs are in sharp contrast to those of his mates who are enjoying the benefits of learning a trade. Dropping out of A-levels, he is determined to go the distance on Bricking It, as apprenticeships are hard to come by - Laurence has been looking for an apprenticeship for the last 2 years and hasn't been successful.

Bricking It Interview

Channel 4: Why do you want to work in the building trade?
Laurence: I like to work with people and I feel I am a team worker. I also like to do work where there is a sense of achievement at the end of the task. I have also been trying to get an apprenticeship for quite some time but they seem quite tough to come by.

Channel 4: Why should you be on Bricking It?
Laurence: I am an enthusiastic, punctual, easy-going type of guy with a good sense of humour and willingness to learn. I see this as a huge opportunity for me which will motivate me even more.

Channel 4: Have you ever worked in the building industry before?
Laurence: I haven't had any previous experience but I have had a massive interest in the building industry.

Channel 4: What are you hoping to achieve from Bricking It?
Laurence: I hope to achieve a basic knowledge of all trades. Plus a strong knowledge of plumbing and to get an apprenticeship at the end of it.

Channel 4: Is it harder than you expected?
Laurence: I thought it would be tough - and it was!

Channel 4: Do you think Bricking It is helping you to work with other people?
Laurence: This project has taught me you can't always take people at face value. I have really enjoyed working with certain people and this project has helped me work with all types of people.

Channel 4: Can you name two things you personally contribute to the team?
Laurence: I'm an easygoing person who doesn't talk out of turn. I offer a good opinion if I have one and try to work hard. I am always very opinionated!

Channel 4: What have you learnt from Bricking It so far?
Laurence: I have learned so much work-wise through this project. I have also learned that living away from home during the week makes a massive difference to work.

Channel 4: What do you think you will do after Bricking It?
Laurence: To find an apprenticeship with a nice company and to get good qualifications. At the end of my four-year apprenticeship I would like to start up my own business.
