Julie Lark, 26, Painter and Decorator
Julie won Young Decorator of the Year in 1997. Essex born and bred, she is particularly proud of some of the footballers' wives-style makeovers she is employed to do. Her career has received a lot of media attention as Julie represented the UK at the 1999 International Youth Skill Olympics in Canada.
Bricking It Interview
Why did you want to be a painter and decorator?
I always liked working with my hands, enjoyed art at school, knew
someone who was a specialist decorator... so it seemed like an obvious
choice.
What's the best job you've ever worked on?
Every job has different qualities. However, I particularly enjoyed decorating
a £2.3 million house in Essex with open minded customers and
a riverside apartment in London.
What do you do?
All aspects of basic decorating and specialist finishes, ie working with glazers and different materials to see what different effects I can come up with.
What are your hours / wages like?
Generally I work 9-5. However, if I have a priced job I may work longer.
Wages depend on experience, your average apprentice should expect
to earn between £100 and £250 per week.

To get your basic qualifications - then work hard and enjoy it!
