Exam Time

Dr Phil is tearing his hair out with our trainees… so he decides it's time for a few exams to find out who knows what.

Watch the video

It's half way into the project and Dr Phil is worried. He feel that the trainees' attitude and the quality of their work have been deteriorating. "You are wasting my time, you are wasting my money and I'm running out of patience with all of you. Let's get back to reality."

Dr Phil decides to test the trainees individually to assess how much they really have learnt. The results of the tests will be compiled into a league table so their performance can be compared. The test is divided into two parts: a brief oral examination, and a practical test to assess craftskills.

Before the tests the trainees are nervous. But some claim to be indifferent to the challenge ahead. "I don't care," Greg Santos tells the group. "I just don't care. I'm being serious."

But when he bungles the oral test, his reasons for doing so are distinctly fuzzy around the edges. "That's a joke. I know all the questions. The questions are easy. I just don't know the answers."

Swatty David flies through the tests, Laurence does well, and Hannah gets an 'A' grade. But not all the trainees are so successful. Lauren, who wants to set up plumbing company, flunks the oral test, and fails to seal her pipework in the practical exam.

The results from the tests are compiled. A new, competitive spirit has taken hold of the group as they wait to hear how they measure up to their workmates. David is first, then Hannah, then Zac. Lauren is bottom of the table.

For Dr Phil, Lauren's result comes as no surprise. "She's just going through the motions. She's absolutely no use whatsoever." And when he calls Lauren to his office he makes his feelings clear. "You've been last since the day the project started. I need to see what positive steps you're taking. Get off the bottom of the table."

But will Lauren be able to rise to the challenge, and prove to Dr Phil and the other trainees that her place at the bottom of the pile is undeserved?
