Addiction - Programme Notes
Giving Up the Weed

This programme examines the life of J Rock – a 28-year-old music rapper from the renowned Big Brovas band – in his fight to beat his 14-year-old 'weed' addiction. Following his life for a period of 30 days the programme powerfully and honestly illustrates just how difficult a challenge he faces, as he battles to overcome a substance that influences every part of his waking day. From first thing in the morning till last thing at night, cannabis plays an enormous role within his life. It infiltrates all of his life. It impacts at all times – even evident within his closest relationships – with his girlfriend and daughter, parents, friends, musical peers, and his work. He eats, sleeps and thinks of weed every part of every day.

As J grapples with releasing himself from the grip of cannabis, the programme shows the highs and the lows of withdrawal - moving from the very personal account of his self inflicted cutting and harming, to, ultimately, his great enthusiasm and commitment to life – the 'start of his new life'. It shows him starting to build a renewed relationship with his parents; his girlfriend and daughter; and with himself – the man behind the drug use. Both his struggle and commitment are illustrated from day 1 of his battle with emotions running high as he struggles to stay 'weed' free. He succumbs to the weed within two hours of his first attempt. He is introduced to Colin, a Drug Counsellor, and begins a revealing, exploratory personalised journey of his life – from the time when he started experimenting with the drug 14 years ago, to present day. For the first time in his adult life he now strives for, and chooses to be, an adult free from cannabis addiction.
