Presented by comedian Hardeep Sing Kohli who has a night on the town in the company of several young people, Hardeep Does Drinking explores relationships with alcohol and how it impacts on people's behaviours and lives. It highlights and demonstrates the severity of what is seen to be an ever-increasing problem within society at large, and dramatically shows the effect over-consumption of alcohol can have.
Hardeep talks with three young women in their early twenties. They are drinking as they prepare themselves for 'a night on the town'. Hardeep listens as they tell of drunken, uncontrollable incidents in taxis; threats with knives; severe personal injury and other very challenging situations. A weekend visit to a city hospital ward follows – building a picture of the often devastatinging effects of intoxication.
Hardeep conducts a number of experiments to illustrate the power of alcohol. He then goes on to explain in a variety of ways, why we use alcohol, what effect it has on our body; behavioural changes as a result of drinking, and some of the consequences of alcohol misuse. He then poses some questions and concerns about how alcohol abuse can impact on future health.
A key message emerging from the programme is that we need to discuss and talk more openly about our use – or as is more often the case – misuse of alcohol. Escalating costs to the taxpayer and NHS appear unsustainable. Young people's lives are severely impacted upon through alcohol use. Young people must receive adequate education to ensure that they understand the consequences of alcohol abuse.
Teachers, parents and carers should familiarise themselves with any guidance and guidelines to alcohol education. They also need to be aware that uncontrolled experimentation with alcohol and binge drinking incidents can be dangerous and, sometimes, fatal. It can be a sensitive area for some, and as such, requires to be tackled within a supportive context and accommodating environment.
