Theme

The action juxtaposes man's coping with his lonely independent suffering with a consideration of the possibility of interdependence, the characters hoping to better their endurance by joining forces to unite sight and mobility in the interests of survival.

The uneasy conclusion leaves man suspended in limbo – one character whirling round, seizing the end of the pole and wrenching it from the other's grasp – stasis being ever the natural lot of men.
