A Piece of Monologue

Background >

Character

Groping about in the dark of night, an old man (Speaker) with white hair, white socks and white nightgown, is 'barely visible' in the faint light. He spends every night facing a wall from which he has ripped pictures of former 'loved ones,' memories that stir his imagination. In

both appearance and thought, the old man is practically a ghost – born to join 'the dead and gone' – in this 'Ghost light, ghost room, ghost grave.'

His third person narration sounds a competing voice of another self – 'The words falling from his mouth' – who appears to stare beyond 'the dying and going' of the human condition.
